Sending off 2007.
And embracing a brand new year in 2008.
Every year on the eve of new year, billions and millions of people all over the world wait eagerly to count down and welcome a new year.
I've always wondered why we spent so much energy, made so many plans and put everything on hold while waiting to count down to a new year?
What is it about this day that has us believe we have a chance to make a new start?
Why do we wait an entire year to suddenly resolve to be different - emotionally, physically, financially and spiritually?
Perhaps it's something in the air, caused by the alignment of the moon.
Personally, I find it just another reason to have fun and make-merry. As for New Year resolutions, I never believe in them.
On New Year's Eve, I made Japanese Soba Noodles.
I'd seen on Japan Hour that the Japanese digs in to soba on the eve of New Year because they believe the stretchiness of soba represents longevity and good fortune, while its easily-broken texture alludes to cutting off bad luck from the past.
With this interesting thought in mind, I decided that slurping on 'toshikoshi' (means 'year-crossing' in Japanese) noodles is what we'll do in anticipation of Year 2008.
Our sa-ke for the night to complement the soba. Cheers to a new year that brings new hopes, new plans and a renewed energy to move ahead.
I couldn't find mini cups suitable for our sa-ke. So, I brought out the tea cups we used for our tea ceremony on our wedding!
And some marinated butter prawns to go along.
Mini celebration in the office too. We had a mini potluck by the Managers and Team Leaders. Each of us brought one dish for the staff.
And the variety was vast and plenty.
Jiggly 'guo dongs'.
And more!
Lastly, here's wishing you a good year ahead.
Embrace every moment and cherish the time spent with all your loved ones and friends.
That way, you will look back at time well-spent in the next countdown.
